Very rich. 1 ½ squares unsweetened chocolate ½ cup water 2/3 cup sugar ¼ cup butter or margarine 1 ½ tsp. vanilla 1 cup sifted all-purpose flour ¾ cup sugar 1 tsp. baking powder ½ tsp. salt ¼ cup soft shortening ½ cup milk ½ tsp. vanilla 1 egg 1 unbaked 9-in. pie shell with high rim ½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional) Sauce: Melt chocolate in water; add 2/3 cup sugar. Bring to boil, stirring constantly. Remove from heat. Stir in butter and 1 ½ tsp. vanilla. Set aside. Batter: Sift flour, ¾ cup sugar, baking powder and salt. Add shortening, milk, egg, and ½ tsp. vanilla. Beat 2 minutes. Pour batter into unbaked pie shell. Stir chocolate sauce and pour carefully over batter. Sprinkle top with nuts (optional). Bake in moderate oven, 350 degrees, for 55 minutes |
